Starting the School Year Strong
Starting a new school can be exciting for many students, but for some, it brings a lot of anxiety. Having friends can make any new situation easier. For some people, making friends comes naturally, while for others, stepping out of their comfort zone can be challenging. When something isn't easy, we often avoid it. Below are some tips on how to make friends in school (this is not an exhaustive list):
- Remember their name: Our names are special, and hearing our own name can make us feel recognized and valued.
- Learn about their interests and ask questions: Encourage the other person to talk about what they enjoy. Showing genuine interest in their hobbies can help build a connection.
- Ask questions to get to know them better: If you’re unsure where to start, look up some conversation starters and practice them at home.
- Listen actively and respond: Show that you’re listening by commenting on what they say. Avoid changing the subject or seeming disinterested.
- Make the other person feel important: When you make someone feel valued, they’re likely to do the same for you.
- Be yourself: Don’t try to fit in by changing who you are. Authenticity is key to forming genuine friendships.
- You don’t have to be friends with everyone: It’s important to be friendly, but having a few close friends is more valuable than trying to be friends with everyone.
Sometimes forget how important friendships are at this age. In fact, many adults still struggle with this. The same steps can work for you too.
Another way to bond is finding similarities and like interests- so what better way then to share this year's Fall Spirit Days!!
It's a great day to be a Panther!
