STAAR Season in NISD

Greetings Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to STAAR season!!  During the spring semester, students in grades 6–8 will take the STAAR assessments (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness).  Our teachers have put in a lot of work this year, and the growth we’ve seen has been impressive. Students have also spent time reviewing strategies so they feel prepared going into testing.

We ask that you partner with us by encouraging your child to do their personal best. Remind them to use the strategies they’ve learned and to take their time. It’s normal for students to feel some anxiety, so reassurance from home can make a big difference. Let them know they’re prepared and capable. This is especially important with writing—encourage them to slow down, plan their response, and apply the strategies they’ve practiced.

To help set them up for success, please make sure your child gets a good dinner, a healthy breakfast, and charges their Chromebook each night. Have them dress in layers so they’re comfortable throughout the day. Blankets, toys, and stuffed animals are not permitted during testing, but students may bring a book.

I’m excited to see our students show what they know!

Please note that on all STAAR testing days, our campus will be closed. Visitors will not be allowed for lunch, volunteering, or other activities, and we will not accept deliveries for students. Maintaining a secure and focused testing environment is a priority for our campus and district.

If possible, please avoid checking students out early on STAAR testing days so they have ample time to complete their assessments without feeling rushed.

Texas House Bill 1416 (2023) updated requirements for students who do not pass STAAR. Students who are not successful will be required to receive at least 15–30 hours of additional instruction during the summer or the following school year. The number of hours depends on individual student performance. This support is provided in addition to regular classroom instruction. More information is available on the TEA website.

Our staff is committed to providing a supportive and structured testing environment that helps every student perform at their best. Thank you for your continued support in helping us ensure a successful testing experience for all students.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education.

Keep Believing!
