Pike Middle School named National PTA Schools of Excellence

The National Parent Teacher Association has named Pike Middle School and Northwest High School to its list of just 173 Schools of Excellence in the United States for the work of their school community associations.

Pike and Northwest, which each operate PTSAs that include student input, were named to the 2016-18 National PTA Schools of Excellence list for their leadership in cultivating rich school-based relationships between parents, teachers and students. Pike is one of just three Texas middle schools to receive the award, while Northwest is one of just two Texas high schools to receive the award. This year’s honor also marks the second consecutive time Pike has been named to the list.

Jason Childress, principal of Northwest High School, said the honor represents the culmination of years’ worth of work.

“It’s such an honor to receive this award following a revamp of our PTSA that Michelle Smith, our association president, and I set out to undertake two years ago,” he said. “This award is only possible with her guidance and the help of many more parents and community members. I certainly look forward to many more years of partnering with our parents and community members for the betterment of our students.”

Chris Jones, principal of Pike Middle School, echoed Mr. Childress’ sentiments regarding the honor and said it serves as an affirmation of his school’s efforts in building a strong community.

“At our school, we try to make sure every member of our community is involved and informed in what we’re doing,” he said. “Our PTSA really acts as a pulse of the school, making sure there’s two-way communication about what’s going on in the community. Our parents, teachers and students do a tremendous job fostering Pike Panther pride.”

As a result of their inclusion in the list, Pike and Northwest are now eligible for the National PTA’s Phoebe Apperson Hearst Awards for Innovation in Family Engagement, the association’s top honor. The National PTA will reveal the winners of the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Awards via a live announcement on Facebook at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9.
